For most of One Piece’s run, the Five Elders — known in Japanese as the Gorosei — were treated as a mystery almost entirely built on implication. Ageless, unreadable, and clearly answering to someone even more powerful, fans spent years speculating about whether they were secretly gods, immortals, or remnants of a lost civilization. Thanks to the Egghead Island arc, that speculation isn’t purely theoretical anymore. The manga has now shown, on-page, exactly how monstrous these five actually are — even if it hasn’t fully settled the “are they gods” question. Here’s what’s confirmed, what’s still theory, and why the distinction matters heading into the story’s final stretch.

Who the Five Elders Are
The Five Elders sit at the top of the World Government’s visible power structure, outranking the Marines and Cipher Pol while answering directly to Imu, the hidden sovereign ruling from the shadows. For most of the series they were functionally faceless — recurring in flashbacks and council scenes without ever showing real combat ability, which only deepened the mystery around what they were actually capable of. That changed decisively once the story reached Egghead.
Not confirmed gods — but confirmed to be something well beyond ordinary humans. The Egghead Island arc revealed all five members hold mythical Zoan Devil Fruits that let them transform into demonic, yokai-based forms, individually strong enough to fight Admiral-and-Yonko-level threats. Whether that power originates from something divine or simply from rare Devil Fruits is still an open question.
What’s Now Confirmed
The single biggest reveal is that the Five Elders are Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit users. When Saint Jaygarcia Saturn confronted the Straw Hats on Egghead, he transformed into a yokai-inspired demonic form, and once he summoned the rest of the Elders to the island, each of them displayed their own distinct transformation. These aren’t vague “supernatural aura” hints anymore — they’re on-page Devil Fruit abilities with visible, monstrous true forms.
The second major confirmation is raw combat strength. Saturn went toe-to-toe with Luffy while he was in Gear 5, without being obviously outmatched, which places him — and by extension the other Elders — solidly above the Admirals and into territory that overlaps with the Yonko. That single confrontation did more to answer “how strong are they really” than the previous thousand-plus chapters combined.
The third confirmation is their identities. Their public titles and true names are tied directly to the five visible planets of the solar system — Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and Pluto — each name doubling as a title (Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, for instance) that was fully revealed alongside their character designs, including on the cover of Volume 110.

| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Each Elder has a Mythical Zoan transformation | Confirmed (ch. 1094–1110) |
| They individually outclass Admirals/Yonko | Confirmed (Saturn vs. Gear 5 Luffy) |
| They are literal gods / divine beings | Still theory |
| They are Ancient Kingdom survivors | Still theory |
Haki OR Devil Fruit (which is better)
What’s Still Just Theory
Even with all of that confirmed, the “are they gods” question is genuinely still open, and it’s important not to conflate confirmed power with confirmed divinity.
The theory that they’re literal mythological gods remains unconfirmed. Their planetary naming convention and yokai-based forms clearly draw from real-world myth and folklore — Saturn representing authority and time, Mars representing war, and so on — but that’s a design choice with thematic resonance, not proof they’re supernatural deities rather than exceptionally powerful Devil Fruit users.
Their exact ages and how long they’ve actually ruled also remain unconfirmed. What’s clear from Saturn’s flashback material is that they were already active during the God Valley Incident roughly 38 years before the present story, and they looked essentially the same then as they do now — which strongly implies extreme longevity, but doesn’t confirm true immortality or explain its source.
The Ancient Kingdom connection is likewise still theoretical. Their active role in suppressing knowledge of the Void Century keeps this theory alive — it would explain both their motivation and their apparent age — but nothing in the Egghead reveals has directly confirmed a link between the Elders and that lost civilization.

Why the Distinction Between “Confirmed” and “Theory” Actually Matters
It’s tempting to round “extremely powerful, ageless, secretive rulers” up to “gods,” but One Piece has been fairly deliberate about keeping that line blurry rather than crossing it outright. What Oda has actually delivered is a mechanism — Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits — that explains their combat power without requiring a divine explanation. That’s narratively significant, because it means the Elders’ power, however overwhelming, still operates within the same rules as everyone else’s Devil Fruit abilities. Whatever “god-like” quality they still carry is more likely to come from their political position, their unexplained longevity, and their proximity to Imu than from any confirmed supernatural status.
Where This Leaves the Bigger Mystery
The Egghead reveals answered the “how strong are they” question conclusively while deliberately leaving the “what are they, really” question open. That’s consistent with how One Piece tends to handle its biggest mysteries — resolve the combat-relevant details first, save the historical and cosmic implications for later. Given how tightly the Five Elders are tied to Imu, the Void Century, and the still-unresolved Ancient Kingdom mystery, it’s likely their true nature will only be fully explained alongside those other reveals in the story’s final arcs, rather than as a standalone answer.

Conclusion
The Five Elders are no longer a pure mystery box — the manga has confirmed they’re Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit users individually capable of matching Yonko-and-Admiral-level threats, with real names tied to the five visible planets. What hasn’t been confirmed is whether any of that adds up to actual godhood, or whether it’s simply the byproduct of extraordinarily rare Devil Fruits paired with centuries of unexplained longevity. As One Piece heads toward its final arcs, expect that distinction to matter a great deal.
