📅 May 20, 2026 · ⏱ 8 min read · 📺 Amazon Prime Video
Start Reading Jump to TableSo you want to watch The Boys — the darkest, most satirical superhero show on television — but you’re not sure where to start or how to fit in Gen V, Diabolical, and all the other spinoffs? You’ve come to the right place.
With Season 5 (the final season) having premiered in April 2026 on Prime Video, now is the absolute best time to catch up. This guide covers every watch order option — whether you want chronological order, release order, or a “must-watch only” route — so you never miss a beat.
Watch The Boys S1 → S2 → S3 → Gen V S1 → S4 → Gen V S2 → S5. Sprinkle in Diabolical’s two canon episodes after Season 2. Everything else is optional but rewarding.
The Recommended Watch Order
This is the order we suggest for any new viewer. It balances narrative flow, avoids major spoilers, and slots the spinoffs exactly where they fit best story-wise.
The one that started it all. Billy Butcher assembles a ragtag group to take down the corrupt Supes of Vought International. Pure chaos, brilliant satire. No prior knowledge needed — just dive in.
Introduces Stormfront and digs deeper into white nationalism, systemic racism, and Homelander’s fragile ego. One of the strongest seasons in the entire franchise.
Only Episode 8 (“One Plus One Equals Two”) and Episode 4 (“BFFs”) are officially canon, confirmed by showrunner Eric Kripke. Watch these after Season 2. The other 6 are fun but non-essential alternate universe stories.
Introduces Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and the infamous Herogasm episode. The show stops being self-contained here — this is Part 1 of the endgame arc. Buckle up.
Set at Godolkin University, following young Supes who discover dark secrets about their powers. It feeds directly into The Boys S4. Great characters, fast pacing — not just homework.
Homelander has never been more powerful. Butcher is running out of time. The season ends on a massive cliffhanger that makes Season 5 feel absolutely essential.
Set directly after The Boys S4, this season ties the Gen V characters into the main story. The finale hands them off to The Boys S5. Do not skip this before the grand finale.
The final season. Showrunner Eric Kripke has called it the franchise’s endgame moment. Every storyline converges here. This is what you have been building toward all along.

About the Spinoffs — Do You Need to Watch Them?
The Boys has grown into a full franchise (officially called the VCU — Vought Cinematic Universe). Here’s what each spinoff is and whether you actually need it.
Gen V
Follows young Supes at Godolkin University. Both seasons are strongly recommended — Gen V S2 feeds directly into The Boys S5. The show was canceled after Season 2, but the characters continue in the finale season.
Diabolical
Animated anthology, 8 episodes. Only Episodes 4 and 8 are canon per Eric Kripke. The rest are fun but set in alternate universes — skip them if you’re just here for the story.
Vought Rising
Confirmed prequel set in the 1950s, starring Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront. Explores Vought’s origins. Expected to premiere in 2027 on Prime Video.
The Boys: Mexico
In development with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. A completely different tone from the main show, set in the same shared universe. No release date yet, but it’s officially in the works.

Final Verdict: What’s the Best The Boys Watch Order?
If you’re a first-time viewer, follow the recommended order: main show Seasons 1–3, then Gen V S1 as a bridge into Season 4, then Gen V S2 before the grand finale in Season 5. Sprinkle in Diabolical’s two canon episodes after Season 2.
If you’re a returning fan catching up before Season 5, you really just need Gen V Season 2 — it aired in September 2025 and bridges directly into the finale season.
However you watch it, The Boys remains one of the most original, brutal, and genuinely funny shows on streaming. With Season 5 being the swan song, there has never been a better time to binge from the beginning.
